Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
