Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
