The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
